Roseau, October 2017. The Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica has declared a state of emergency following the devastating effect of Hurricane Maria on 19 September 2017, which has left 27 people dead, many more missing and 90% of the country’s structures destroyed or damaged.
The Prime Minister The Hon Roosevelt Skerrit, has announced that the Dominican Government and their High Commission in London have set up a relief fund to mobilise efforts in obtaining resources to aid Dominica.
The Constantinian Order since 2014 has been actively supporting numerous projects on the Caribbean island and commonwealth state as part of a wider regional engagement. The Bishop of Roseau and Constantinian Order chaplain the Most Rev Gabriel Malzaire has confirmed that the Order’s projects have been spared from any significant damage although this is not the case with many other diocesan properties.
The Delegate for Great Britain and Ireland, Anthony Bailey OBE said “Our Delegation has several members who are from Dominica and so I would urge all our knights, dames and supporters to support this campaign and to provide what help they can to the people in Dominica at this difficult time. The scale of devastation has been tremendous and we all need to play our part in praying and helping the countless families and communities who have been so tragically affected by this hurricane.”
