Washington DC, May 2017. Delegation knight, The Rt Hon Prof Lord Alton of Liverpool, attended and participated in the first ever World Summit In Defense of Persecuted Christians held at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington DC during 10 – 13 May 2017.

The objective of the Summit was to raise global awareness about the plight of persecuted Christians and call for solutions to the unprecedented persecution of Christians happening today around the world.

More than 600 Christian delegates from 130 countries and territories and church leaders of various Christian denominations attended the Summit. US Senate Chaplain and retired Rear Admiral Barry Black opened the World Summit with a word of prayer. The US Vice-President Mike Pence addressed the Summit on 11 May 2017.

Lord Alton spoke about the need to enforce Article 18 of the 1948 Universal declaration of Human Rights which proclaims the right of every human being to believe, not to believe or to change their belief and the Genocide Convention.

“We must emphasise the tangible benefits that accrue to societies that protect religious freedom. A society which promotes religious freedom will be enlivened and enriched and one that does not, will decay.” Said Lord Alton in his remarks.
